This report offers case studies of different communities’ efforts to collect pedestrian and bicycle data, and offers recommendations for improvement. The Federal Highway Administration surveyed communities across the United States that collected, by various means, data on pedestrian and bicycle use. Concerns include costs, undercounting, and lack of buy-in from various departments. The authors recommend a plan before the data is collected, in order to foster sharing of data and innovative strategies between agencies.
