ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION

These case studies look at 86 U.S. jurisdictions that have best implemented facilities that have resulted in connected active transportation networks.  This study is not to be confused with another FHWA-sponsored publication, Delivering Safe, Comfortable, and Connected Pedestrian and Bicycle Networks: A Review of International Practices, which looks at international examples. Here, FHWA Division Offices gathered and compiled examples of pedestrian and bicycle network improvement projects initiated by State DOTs, MPOs, counties, cities, and other local entities. Of those, it chose 86 that addressed their areas of study: Planning and Prioritization,  Shared Use Paths, improvements to high volume corridors, improvement to bridges for non-motorized On-Road Facilities, and intersections and crossing improvement. The Appendix also include the department contacts for the case studies.
