The county’s subdivision code requires sidewalks, built to codified standards, depending on density of dwelling units (§34-6-13). Sidewalks are required on one side of street when density is 2–4 du/acre, on both sides of the street when density is 4.1 or more du/acre, and on collector streets, near schools, shopping and similar areas. It allows for variances if sidewalks in the area would be impractical or a proposed pedestrian plan would be safer or more direct.
