This article looks at several examples of “town center” developments and identifies what makes projects successful. It also explains the difference between town centers, which entail a genuine mix of uses and a pedestrian environment, and “lifestyle centers,” which, while styled after town centers, are still car dependent. Projects profiled or discussed include town centers in St. Louis Park, MN, Westlake, OH, Boca Raton, FL, Kansas City, MO, Mashpee, MA, Hillsboro, OR, and Shaker Heights, OH. It also features advice from a project manager who worked on the mixed-use center in Hillsboro.
