Grayfields Reuse and Redevelopment

This article explains the forces causing conventional car-oriented strip development to become less viable. Explanations given include an over building of this type of development, the rediscovered appeal of urban areas for typical big box retailers, the redesign of suburbs into less car-oriented spaces, the impact of higher fuel prices and traffic congestion, changing consumer trends and their preference for walkable areas, and the rise of e-commerce. It follows up by providing six design suggestions to mitigate these impacts by making shopping centers pedestrian-oriented.
