The city’s functional plan outlines an aging in place strategy, which builds on its perceived strengths, and focuses on issues particular to its community. The city found that it was strong in such areas as arts and cultural events, lifespan-friendly housing, senior services, and other approaches to wellness. It sees that it needs to respond to the demographic trend of people living longer and living independently in their homes. In addition to the Baby Boomers, the city has a large, aging LGBTG and HIV-positive community, as well as Russian-speaking emigrants, many of whom are 80 and 90 years of age. It will seek to support their housing needs.
