Tree Preservation and the Urban Forest

The webpage for the city’s urban forestry office provides information about multiple urban forestry initiatives. The Kick Ash Campaign incentivizes tree professionals to spend one day to cut down dead or diseased ash trees for free by waiving their license fee for one year. Their Adopt-A-Street-Tree Program allows residents to request a tree, which the city will deliver free of charge, to be planted in the right of way in front of the resident’s house. The resident is responsible for the tree’s maintenance. Muncie also has a Memory Tree Program, in which residents can purchase a tree and dedicate it to someone or something. The tree will be cared for by the Parks Department, and the dedication will be engraved on a plaque at the site of the tree. They also have an informal tree registry program that allows residents to submit specific trees they value with an explanation of their value, and the city will present awards for the best submissions and incorporate responses when considering future preservation actions.
