Tree Preservation and the Urban Forest 

The city’s code contains two sections that establish requirements for tree preservation, planting, and maintenance for public and private property.

Its public tree code addresses definitions, administration, role of the parks and recreation advisory board, relationship to other regulations, prohibited activities, prohibitions on certain trees, diseased trees and shrubs, activities requiring permits, variances, fees, planting trees on city property, tree pruning and treating criteria, application review for tree removal, removal of trees in historic districts or on historic sites, city tree removal criteria, appeals, the master city tree plan, enforcement, statement of costs, payments and credits, stop work orders, remedies, violations, and emergencies (§86).

Its zoning code includes private tree standards that addresses definitions, heritage trees, significant trees, trees in riparian corridors, trees on large lots, tree removal permits, tree conservation plans and plan adjustments, tree variances, tree planting requirements, tree replacement within riparian corridors, tree canopy preservation fund, and enforcement (§808).
