The city’s general plan addresses farmland protection in Chapter 15, Agriculture, Soils, and Minerals. Under the goals of maintaining agriculture as an important industry around the city, policies address protecting agricultural land from urban development (AG 1.1) and promoting and enhancing local agriculture (AG 1.2); standards address discouraging residential development in areas with productive farm soils and reducing development impacts on adjacent agricultural lands. Action include encouraging participation in farmland preservation programs, establishing 150-foot minimum agricultural buffers, requiring disclosure agreements for new developments within 1,000 feet of agricultural lands, protecting the right to farm, and implementing the farmland preservation ordinance to mitigate for farmland loss.
