This bulletin from Rutgers Cooperative Extension examines the economic contributions of agritourism in the state of New Jersey, where agritourism was formally identified as an agricultural economic development strategy in 2004. The bulletin identified five broad types of agritourism activity in the state: on-farm direct-to-consumer sales, educational tourism, entertainment, accommodations, and outdoor recreation. It found that 21.5 percent of New Jersey farms offered some form of agritourism in 2006, representing 43 percent of the state’s total farmland base, and that the impacts were significant: $57.5 million in farmgate revenue was generated by agritourism activities.
