This report provides an extensive review of the state-of-the-practice concerning planning and implementing transit-oriented development (TOD). Individual chapters address an overview of TOD, the breadth and scope of TOD and joint development in the U.S., the institutional landscape for TOD, TOD implementation tools, the private-sector perspective on TOD, barriers to TOD, the benefits of TOD, the effects of TOD on transit ridership, real estate market impacts, case studies of specific efforts, research findings and policy lessons, and policy reflections and future research directions.
