Age-Friendly Communities
This report stresses the importance of preserving affordable housing in transit-oriented developments to enhance the livability of a community for older adults. The authors analyzed affordable housing location in 20 metropolitan areas and selected five for deeper case study: Boston, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Miami, and Minneapolis/St. Paul. Three policy recommendations related to preserving existing affordable housing, integrating housing and transportation, and improving public transportation are discussed.
Transit-Oriented Development
This report highlights the importance of protecting and expanding affordable housing opportunities for older Americans in transit-oriented development (TOD) areas. It presents findings from a study analyzing the location of affordable housing in 20 metropolitan areas across the United States and includes policy recommendations organized under three themes:
- Preserving existing affordable housing
- Integrating housing, transportation, and land-use planning
- Improving and investing in public transportation
