This article examines the importance of but also the difficulty in defining neighborhood planning areas. It includes an analysis on the conceptual and operational framework of a “neighborhood” through the study of four exclusive groups of neighborhoods: face-block neighborhoods, residential neighborhoods, institutional neighborhoods and community.
