Outdoor Lighting

Each year, the county’s Environmental Quality Advisory Council prepares this annual report that summarizes environmental conditions, trends, programs, legislation, and issues in Fairfax County and presents its recommendations on a variety of environmental issues. Chapter IX of the county’s 2016 report details the main issues and problems of noise, light pollution, and visual blight. The section focusing on light pollution (§IX-2) describes five main issues and problems of exterior lighting and light pollution; evaluates current county standards, regulations, and practices; and makes recommendations on four areas within the existing outdoor lighting ordinance to add to or amend.
