Outdoor Lighting

This report examines the potential negative environmental impacts of a shift from yellow-rich high-pressure sodium to blue-rich solid-state LED “cool white” lighting technologies. The report presents a brief description of the physical processes related to the propagation of light through the atmosphere for background; discusses the ramifications for human visibility and lighting; and offers a brief synopsis of human health effects, environmental effects, and finally, astronomical and scenic considerations.
