Outdoor Lighting

This model outdoor lighting code is based on the 2000 IDA Outdoor Lighting Code Handbook. It is held up by some advocates (including an Illinois dark-sky advocacy group) as a more reasonable and effective approach than the 2010 IDA/IES Model Lighting Ordinance. The model includes general standards for various types of lighting, as well as specific standards for outdoor advertising and certain uses such as recreational facilities, vehicle display areas, and service station canopies. A background report, Considerations for Outdoor Lighting in the MAG Region: A Resource Guide and Report Developed by the MAG Dark Sky Stakeholders Group, provides background to the pattern code and answers frequently asked questions.
