Outdoor Lighting

The village’s zoning regulations include exterior lighting regulations (§5-3-13). The regulations seek to “minimize light pollution and will conserve energy and resources while maintaining nighttime health, safety, utility and security” and “protect the health and welfare of the general public and protect the ecological and natural resources of the village, while preserving the ability to view the celestial features of the night sky for present and future generations.” The ordinance includes a purpose statement, definitions, exemptions, and prohibited lighting. It offers standards for residential lighting, sports lighting, nonresidential lighting, and parking lots. It establishes amortization frameworks for different lighting types and uses and describes lighting plan submission requirements.
