Outdoor Lighting

The county’s zoning ordinance addresses outdoor lighting (§13). The county repealed its standalone lighting ordinance in 2016. The lighting section in the zoning code is intended to reduce light pollution and glare. It incorporates IESNA fixture cutoff classifications and offers definitions, as well as a light measurement technique. The ordinance offers general standards for outdoor lighting, requiring a lighting plan to be approved prior to building permit approval, and offers standards for lighting in outdoor areas, vehicular canopies, outdoor sports fields and performance areas, natural recreation areas, outdoor display areas, buildings, signs, holiday lighting, walkways, and landscapes. It describes permitting requirements and processes, and addresses nonconformities.
