Outdoor Lighting

The city’s building regulations address outdoor lighting (§24.06.001 et seq.). The city’s lighting ordinance provides definitions and lists exemptions. It applies to all new commercial development and residential development requiring a building permit; provisions describe how to bring nonconforming lighting into compliance and establish a ten-year amortization period. Shielding and total outdoor light output standards are provided for government-owned streetlights and other outdoor lighting, including fixtures rated by the B-U-G classification system. The code provides specific standards for outdoor recreation facilities, outdoor signs, canopies, and flagpoles. Lighting curfews are established. The ordinance describes requirements for lighting plans to be submitted with building permit applications.
