Outdoor Lighting

The village’s code includes a chapter on outdoor lighting (§188-1 et seq.). This ordinance, adopted in 2004 and amended in 2015, is considered one of the strongest outdoor lighting ordinances in the country. The ordinance is intended to protect the night sky. It offers an extensive list of definitions; nonconforming lighting must not cause light trespass or glare. The code establishes general standards for nonresidential lighting, as well as the placement and height of all exterior lighting and illuminance and lamp types.
