The city addresses outdoor lighting in its development code (Chapter 18.715). The purpose of the ordinances is to provide standards for appropriate lighting practices and systems permitting reasonable amounts of light while conserving energy, preserving the nighttime environment, and minimizing adverse impacts including light pollution, light trespass, and glare.
The provisions of the chapter apply to all exterior lighting fixtures on private and public property with certain exemptions, including streetlights. General standards prohibit light trespass and address fixture shielding and aim, accent lighting, spotlighting, wattage limits, hours of lighting, and LED streetlighting requirements; the code lists prohibited fixtures. Site plan application lighting requirements are detailed. The code offers four illustrations of acceptable and unacceptable exterior lighting fixtures.
