Outdoor Lighting

The city’s outdoor lighting code is located in the Building and Property Regulations section of the municipal code (Chapter 152). It focuses on minimizing glare and light trespass as well as “good neighbor” lighting practices.

The code provides a list of definitions. General regulations address after hours lighting, mounting height limits, and prohibited lighting types. Light trespass provisions establish permitted thresholds. Standards are provided for lighting for buildings and vertical structure illumination, off-street lighting, illuminated signs, recreational facilities, and special light sources. Exemptions are listed. The code also addresses nonconforming outdoor lighting, including immediate aiming and shielding adjustments; outdoor lighting plan requirements for development permit approvals; variance application procedures; field verification for light level measurements; and penalties for violations of the ordinance.
