Home Occupations

The city’s unified development code distinguishes between high- and low-intensity home occupations.

It permits low-intensity “home occupations” by right, subject to use specific standards (§10-7-6.D.1). It allows high-intensity “cottage industries” in certain zoning districts with a discretionary use permit, subject to use-specific standards (§10-5-3.B & C).

All home occupations must comply with residency, dwelling modification, sign (see §10-10-7.A), parking, storage, utility, and noise standards (§10-7-6.D).

Standards for home occupations and cottage industries vary by zoning district (§10-7-6.H). Variable standards include location and space, customers, shipping, vehicle size, animals, and nonresident employees. Cottage industry uses must also adhere to discretionary use permit standards (§10-4-3.D).
