Home Occupations

The county’s zoning code distinguishes between four types of home occupations. It allows home occupations with a discretionary use permit, subject to use specific standards (§14.08.3.020.N).

It permits “Customary Home Occupations” in certain residential districts (§14.08.3.020.N.1). “Customary home occupations” must comply with location and space, sign, display, employee, dwelling modification, sales, vehicle, nuisance, and hours of operation standards (§14.08.3.020.N.1).

It permits “Rural home occupations” in certain rural districts (§14.08.3.020.N.3). “Rural home occupations” must comply with location and space, employee, material and storage, sales, vehicle, and hours of operation standards (§14.08.3.020.N.3). “Rural home occupations” permit higher-intensity uses than “customary home occupations” (§14.08.3.020.N.3.f).

“Child care home occupations” must comply with the “customary home occupation” standards, in addition to number of children, minimum play area, and fencing standards (§14.08.3.020.N.2).

“Auto repairs and sales home occupations” standards include: descriptions of permissible ‘minor’ repairs, location of repair activities, number of on-site vehicles for sale, sign, and advertising (§14.08.3.020.N.4).
