Tiny Houses and Micro-Apartments

The city's codified ordinances define and regulate chassis- and foundation-mounted tiny homes.

Its building and construction code distinguishes between chassis or foundation-mounted tiny homes that meet building code requirements for dwelling units and tiny homes on wheels that meet recreational vehicle requirements (§6-191). Tiny homes must satisfy manufactured home requirements (§6-194 & §6-195).

Its zoning code defines two types of "tiny homes": "auxiliary dwelling units" and "tiny homes on wheels" (§44-1). Auxiliary dwelling units may be chassis- or foundation-mounted but must meet building code requirements for dwelling units. Tiny homes on wheels must meet state requirements for recreational vehicles. It permits auxiliary dwelling units in one residential district (§44-80). It permits tiny homes on wheels in manufactured home parks (§44-84). Both types of units must have at least 400 ft2 of living area, with a maximum of two occupants (§44-89).
