This report is a case study on the environmental effects of wind turbines in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia. As a National Academies publication, the findings are meant to be generalizable to the other states in the U.S.
Sections include study methodology and wind energy background, ecological and human impacts of wind energy systems, and planning and regulatory considerations. It discusses national, regional, state, and local approaches to planning (p.181) and regulating (p.191) wind energy development. The report summarizes many of its findings in the form of a guide (p.214).
