Short-Term Residential Rentals

This article examines in detail New York City’s experience in addressing short-term residential rentals and explores additional policy options for the city. It begins by describing New York’s affordable housing landscape and the city’s attempts to accommodate both residents and increasing numbers of tourists, and further explores the impacts of Airbnb on the city, both its benefits and “bad actors.” It then critiques the city’s existing policies on short-term residential rentals, and it concludes by examining efforts by other municipalities, as well as Airbnb itself, to better regulate short-term residential rentals in ways that mitigate their potential negative impacts.
