Benefits of Compact, Mixed Use Development

This report makes the connection between walkability and economic measures like real estate value, transportation costs, and educational attainment in Washington, D.C. The results show that walkable neighborhoods, especially those surrounded by other walkable neighborhoods, are correlated with higher housing costs, lower transportation costs, and less social equity. The authors conclude that smart growth policies should be pursued at all levels of government and should engage a variety of stakeholders.
