This article looks at the impact of urban environments on nonmotorized travel in the San Francisco region. It concludes that built environment factors exert a much more marginal effect on walking and biking than exogenous factors like topography, darkness, and rainfall. It argues that more research is needed to connect the goals of public health and planning.
