This report points out how older, smaller buildings contribute to sustainability outcomes through case studies of neighborhoods in Seattle, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco. It finds that areas with higher character scores have a greater density of human and economic activity, more opportunities for economic vitality, and a greater diversity of social and economic activity. Four recommendations and directions for future research are included towards the end of the report.
