This article emphasizes the role of community perception in historic preservation processes. It used surveys in two historic districts in Grand Rapids, Michigan with different senses of place to show how community perception of the importance of preservation differs. It urges preservation planners to collaborate with communities to understand how districts should be preserved on a case by case basis, rather than enforcing strict guidelines.
