Hazard Mitigation

This article provides an overview of land use planning and zoning for hazard mitigation and the planning implications of the Disaster Mitigation Act (DMA). It outlines how hazard mitigation can be promoted with different types of plans and describes requirements for prescribing to the DMA. The article also reviews several land use and zoning tools including nonconforming uses, overlay zones, subdivision regulations, site plan review, performance standards, critical environmental areas, and incentive zoning.
