Hazard Mitigation

The county’s land development code includes regulations designed to mitigate coastal storms and coastal and riverine flooding.

Its Hurricane Preparedness regulations require all new residential development to dedicate land or pay a fee-in-lieu of dedication for storm shelters (§2-481 et seq.).

Its Coastal Construction Code establishes more stringent building regulations for structures in the designated coastal zone (§6-331 et seq.). All major structures must be built to withstand 110-mile-per-hour winds.

Its Flood Hazard Reduction regulations require flood resistant construction for all structures in flood hazard areas (§6-480 et seq.).

Its Mangrove Protection regulations prohibit the removal or violation of mangroves that protect against coastal storms and flooding (§14-451 et seq.)
