Brownfields Redevelopment

The city zoning code establishes a brownfield overlay district (§17.49). The ordinance is designed to enable easier and more expedient environmental review and remediation, establish permitted and prohibited uses, and property development standards for the district.

The site of the overlay district covers a former 55-acre former landfill site. The ordinance's defined purpose includes allowing for heavy trucking in the area, enable environmental study, and implement physical improvements that make the site more attractive for development. The code is unique in its attempt to modernize, rather than shift away from the area's land use legacy.
