This article explores the history and trends of the growth of application-based transportation services made possible by innovations in communications technologies and how this growth influences mobility consumers' travel behavior. The paper further explores the main categories of transportation applications — mobility, connected vehicle, smart parking, and courier network services (CNS) applications — and their influence on how people consume transportation services. It also addresses the opportunities and challenges for broader and more effective adoption of application-based transportation services.
