This briefing paper discusses the importance of using an equity lens for addressing extreme heat issues. It gives an overview of extreme heat trends, discusses the need for communities to focus on equity when addressing extreme heat, and presents an approach on how to plan and implement an equity-centered process. This briefing paper also recommends communities-level approaches to addressing extreme heat, such as assessing community vulnerabilities, building emergency preparedness capacity, and adapting and mitigating through planning and design.
