A new model of urban innovation districts is emerging in U.S. cities. Leading-edge anchor medical and educational institutions and private companies are clustering and connecting with start-ups, incubators, and entrepreneurs to create new ideas and technologies being transformed into high-value commercial products and services.

Cincinnati's Uptown Consortium (UCI), a nonprofit community development corporation founded by anchor medical/health care/cultural institutions, is working to advance economic and social opportunities for its neighborhoods, the city, and southwest Ohio. With small-business support, engaged neighborhood stakeholders, and catalytic development projects, UCI is driving collaboration, institutional alignment, and community benefits that are transforming the Uptown Corridor into a national model for urban community economic development.

Since its 2004 inception, UCI has made more than $200 million in direct investments inducing more than $1 billion in the project and related development. That comprises more than 1 million square feet of R&D/office space; more than 350,000 square feet of retail, hospitality, and community service space; and more than 2,700 residential units, with many more projects in the pipeline.
