As climate change and inequality grow, communities will need to leverage transportation investments to remain competitive, enhance quality of life, and attain sustainability.
This course highlights case studies from three fast-growing communities: the Austin, Texas, MPO and the cities of Dallas and Seattle. They share common and individual challenges because of their booming high-tech economies and high growth. Traffic congestion is worsening, housing costs are rising, inequality is growing, budgets are limited, and environmental issues exist.
Austin has its first-ever Regional Arterials Plan, which seeks to develop strategies for a flexible, multimodal roadway network that responds to changing mode and land-use needs; address increased access to opportunity between and within communities; and prepare for extreme weather events.
Dallas has its first-ever mobility plan, which seeks to address strategic network investments that will enhance multimodal connectivity, jobs-housing balance, and equitable economic resiliency.
Seattle's Racial Equity Toolkit is used for a variety of citywide and neighborhood-based transportation projects and policy.
The course provides planners with an understanding of metrics, policy, and process tools at the local and regional levels for transportation planning outcomes that are culturally competent, inclusive, environmentally conscious, and equitable.
