Learning Outcomes

  • Gain an understanding of what geodesign is and how communities/clients can benefit from it.
  • Learn how geodesign tools and technologies can improve the planning process and help create smarter plans.
  • Learn how to apply interactive technologies to gather, analyze, and plan with a wide range of data.

More Course Details

This course introduces the emerging field of geodesign. Explore how a geodesign approach is changing the ways planners work and how communities are benefiting from software innovation.

Learn about current planning efforts throughout the country, and hear from speakers about the tools they use to create smarter, more meaningful, and compelling plans.

Tools discussed include Arc Collector, ArcGIS Pro, GeoPlanner, Drone2Map, SketchUp, Webmaps, Network Analyst, CityEngine, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and more. Learn how these tools help planners better analyze and assess data, evaluate multiple planning scenarios, enhance public participation, and produce science-based plan recommendations resulting in more sound recommendations and more visually compelling graphics.

Each action in geodesign is a sequential step in a planning process, with the former informing the latter. When used properly, geodesign and its planning tools can enhance data and feedback from the initial analyses, which in turn strengthens possible planning scenarios and thus develops stronger, more-informed plan recommendations.
