Course Details

This session builds baseline knowledge of state and local government requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and lessons learned for successfully adopting ADA transition planning into your organization. While the law has been in place for over three decades, many communities remain inaccessible to people with disabilities and have not made substantial progress in planning for and removing barriers.

The importance of addressing existing barriers in the public right of way is highlighted by recent actions taken by the U.S. Access Board's final rule on Public Right-of-Way (PROWAG) that will go into effect in September 2023. The guidelines provide technical standards for pedestrian facilities, such as sidewalks, crosswalks, shared-use paths, and on-street parking, accessible to people with disabilities.

The course will utilize interactive polls and case studies to demonstrate real-world scenarios and solutions planners have used to embrace and integrate the ADA and PROWAG into their planning practice. Participants will walk away knowing what their obligations are under Title II of the ADA and have effective tools for identifying and removing barriers and going above and beyond compliance to create accessible and inclusive communities.
