Course Details

Political leadership influences the success of planning initiatives and projects. This can be good at times and challenging, or what seems impossible at times. Three planners from the Houston, Texas region share perspectives on how political leadership has helped push the needle forward and times when it comes down to changing a few taboo words to help get something approved.

This course will present perspectives from public-sector, private-sector, and advocacy organizations on the extensive data collection and analysis, countless meetings, thorough engagement, continuous advocacy, and tedious revisions necessary to get buy-in on plans and projects. Each presenter will introduce how politics play a key role in their day-to-day work and examples where politics have both helped and hindered effective change.

Planners must embrace the political roller coasters and accept that sometimes great plans and projects take time (and sometimes multiple administrations) to come to fruition.

Learning Outcomes

  • Provide creative approaches to communicate effectively with a new political administration.
  • Learn about both grassroots and client-driven approaches to get work done in a difficult political environment.
  • Creatively reframe potentially taboo topics in ways that allow for buy-in and support.
