In 2011, the City of Edgerton, Kansas, annexed an intermodal facility operated by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway, which allows BNSF to load and unload trains with cargo containers moved from ports along the coasts. This intermodal facility then led to the development of a 16.5 million square foot logistics park known as Logistics Park Kansas City.
As Edgerton prepares for its first new residential subdivision in over two decades — and the growth that is projected to follow — the city has adopted several long-term plans, including the Envision Edgerton 2050 Comprehensive Plan. Following a robust community engagement period, staff and their consultant, Confluence, Inc., identified four pillars to build on: Housing Diversity, Downtown Edgerton, Business Growth, and Community Facilities and Infrastructure. The plan includes a creative and flexible future land use plan to allow for a mix of housing types and uses, a strong and vibrant downtown, successful activity centers, and a healthy, growing community overall.
Learning Outcomes
- Apply flexibility in a comprehensive plan's future land use designations.
- Anticipate preparing different growth scenarios for a variety of different development trends.
- Educate the community on aspects of planning, including goals, policies, and action steps.
