Course Details

Because of redlining, many communities have been unfairly exposed to incompatible, toxic land uses and environmental injustice. These exposures, coupled with increasing climate hazards and reduced state and federal climate funding, require planners to be more strategic with resiliency planning to equitably ensure more sustainable communities.

Presenters relate how increasing exposure to extreme heat, extreme precipitation and flooding, wildfire, drought, and sea level rise has opened opportunities to develop non-traditional approaches to resiliency planning through creative, meaningful engagement. They share best practices for successful data sharing and gap analysis, paid engagement structures between cities and community-based organizations and tribes, and community-designed, indigenous, nature-based solutions that address climate hazards with multi-pronged approaches.

Learning Outcomes

  • Provide best practices to cities and agencies for developing paid, meaningful, and authentic engagement structures for community-based, indigenous, and nonprofit organizations.
  • Provide best practices for nature-based solutions that address several climate hazards simultaneously and offer multi-pronged approaches when faced with limited funding and resources.
  • Approach future projects with an inclusive planning outlook.
