About This Trend

Controversial symbols, such as Confederate monuments and streets named after contentious historical figures, are increasingly being questioned and, in some cases, removed entirely, as has been seen in Houston; Portland, Oregon; San Jose; and Charlottesville, Virginia, among other cities. There is also a push for a more diverse and equitable distribution of street names, statues, and other features in public spaces that reflect the history of underserved or underrepresented groups.

In opposition to this trend, President Trump signed an executive order in March 2025 to examine recent removals of monuments to Confederate leaders, though it remains to be seen whether these efforts will result in the reinstatement of those statues. Read the Planning article "Monumental Concerns" to learn how different communities have answered the call to take down Confederate statues.
